Julia Kristin Hufenbach appointed to new professorship at TU Bergakademie Freiberg

On January 1, 2023, Julia Kristin Hufenbach will become Professor of Development and Functionalization of metallic materials at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

On January 1, 2023, Prof. Dr. Julia Kristin Hufenbach will take over the professorship Development and Functionalization of Metallic Materials at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. For IFW Dresden, this is the second W2 professorship to be filled as part of a joint appointment procedure.

On December 19, 2022 Prof. Dr. Julia K. Hufenbach received the appointment certificate as Professor (W2) for Development and Functionalization of Metallic Materials from the Prorector for Structural Development of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Urs Peuker. She thus moves from a temporary professorship in the employment relationship to a permanent professorship and now permanently heads the Alloy Design and Process Technologies research group at the IFW. A materials scientist herself, Julia Hufenbach studied at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and was honored with the university's Georgius Agricola Medal for her outstanding scientific achievements after graduating. She also completed her doctorate at the Technical University of Dresden in 2010 with distinction. This makes her ideally suited to further intensify the cooperation between TU Bergakademie Freiberg and IFW Dresden.

Julia K. Hufenbach is head of the research group Alloy Design and Processing Technologies at IFW Dresden. One focus of her work is the development of high-performance steels for modern engineering tools. The focus of materials engineering and processing is on resource-efficient technologies, such as special casting techniques or additive manufacturing processes with sufficiently high cooling rates for setting optimized microstructures.

Another research focus is the development of biodegradable metallic implant materials with the purpose of setting the required microstructure and the associated mechanical, chemical and biological properties in a specific configuration for medical applications.
